VerifierHub: Scam Prevention & Evaluation List

Standard Mitigation Measures

1. Conduct a Scam Check via Google:

Search suspicious keywords e.g. email addresses, subject lines, personal names, business names , phone numbers, websites etc., in Google with the added keyword +scam to check for any scam-related reports or activities.

2. Check for Keyword Reviews and Complaints:

Repeat the above search using the keyword +review to find user feedback or prior incidents related to the entity.

3. Conduct Image Searches:

Images can be photos, scanned documents or scanned IDs (in JPG,JPEG,PNG ,etc). Use tools like images.google.com or TinEye.com to trace the origins and previous appearances of suspicious images. For example, enter images.google.com on your browser, click the camera icon to upload the image file and click -SEARCH.

4. Insist on Video calls

Scammers avoid video calls because they reveal their true identity. Always insist on a video call before engaging in any social or financial transaction, no excuse is acceptable. Ensure your record the videocall for Deepfake checks later. Kindly download a smartphone video recorder or use Zoom video platform to record (allowed only for desktop computers).

5. Analyse weblinks in email, social media, sms ,etc :

6. Verify Company Registration Details:

Check the legitimacy of a business by reviewing its official registration details, especially its incorporation date, via the appropriate government or business registry. Google – Company search portal in the UK . For example to check company registration status in the UK ,you click this official link: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/ and type in the name of the suspicious company .

7. Review Website History:

Suspicion should arise if a business website was created(not renewed) recently, that is within the last two years . Use Whois.com to check website (domain) creation ( registration) dates.

8. Analyze Website Reputation:

Submit any suspicious website URLs to tools like ScamMinder.com or ScamAdviser.com to assess reputation and risk. A score point less than 12 for scamminder.com should raise a red flag.

9. Confirm Regulatory Licenses and Permits:

Apart from company registration, every business is regulated by a regulatory authority in its country. To confirm if a company is licensed, contact the relevant regulator or use their online search tool. Use Google to find the appropriate body e.g., the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) oversees financial institutions in the UK and a suspicion institution can be searched at https://register.fca.org.uk.

10. Check Social Media Presence:

A lack of at least three active social media accounts for an individual or company is a significant red flag.

11. Assume Every Message is a Scam, VERIFY!

Treat every unexpected call, text, or email, even those claiming to be from your bank, telecom provider, tech support, healthcare, insurance, tax authority, or police with suspicion. Never comply with any requests immediately. Instead, search for the official website of the organization or regulatory body using trusted methods (as outlined above), and contact them directly via their official channels to verify the unexpected message or request.

12. Verify received Media Files via Alternate Channels: This is Vital!

If you receive audio, video, or document files from a colleague or known external party, confirm their authenticity through a totally different communication channel (e.g., if you receive a banking instruction via email, please use phone call, SMS, or video chat to confirm details with the sender).
